Senior right-hander Brandon McClurg’s solid performance on the mound helped the Lipscomb Bisons avoid being swept by Jacksonville with a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon.

The mood was heavy for the Jacksonville baseball team at John Sessions Stadium. Curtis Alexander, the father of Jacksonville baseball coach Terry Alexander, had passed away earlier in the morning.

The win by the Bisons ended a four-game winning streak for Jacksonville which won the series, billed as the Atlantic Sun Conference “Series of the Week” 2-1.

The Bisons took command of the game early, scoring runs in the first, second and third innings.

In the first M.L. Williams led off the game with a double down the right field line. Tyler Wilson followed with a single through the left side. Branden Cadavid reached base on a fielder’s choice allowing Williams to score.

Justin Sanders opened the second inning by slamming a triple, his fourth of the season, down the left field line. Logan Hostettler brought Sanders across the plate with a single left field.

Wilson was hit by Jacksonville’s pitcher to start the third inning. Cadavid was safe again on a fielder’s choice as Wilson was out at second. Andrew Nickerson then grounded out to the pitcher. With two outs Allen Bolden singled to right field to score Cadavid.

The Bisons had 10 hits with M.L. Williams, Bolden and Hostettler getting two hits each. M.L. Williams and Cadavid each had a double.

McClurg, 5-4, pitched eight innings. He did not give up a run until the ninth inning when he gave up two. He walked one batter and struck out nine.

Kyle Tognazzini came on in relief and picked up his seventh save by getting the final three outs. He struck out one and walked one.

The Bisons raised their record to 17-26, 11-10 in the A-Sun. Jacksonville is 27-13, 16-6 in the conference.
