NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Looking for a three-game sweep on Sunday, the Lipscomb baseball team was held in check dropping a 10-5 nonconference decision to Evansville at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.

The difference in the game was the fifth inning when Evansville scored seven runs to pull ahead and never look back.

“You hate to talk about those big innings, but we put ourselves in a jam there in the fifth inning and things kind of snowballed from there,” Jeff Forehand said. “I told our guys that if we hung a seven spot in an inning, we probably win the game, but today Evansville was just the better team.”

The loss brought an end to a season high six-game win streak for the Bisons (14-9).

With the visiting Purple Aces (8-15) holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Jeffrey Crisan and Von Watson led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Lee Solomon leveled the score with a groundout to short before Lipscomb’s leading hitter Cade Sorrells ripped a double down the right field line to bring around Watson and give the Bisons a 2-1 lead.

After Evansville struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, the Bisons used back-to-back doubles from Hunter Hanks and Crisan in the home half of the stanza to knot the game at 3-3 before the Aces regained the lead for the final time in the fifth.

“I felt we lacked focus there in the fifth innings,” Crisan said. “Defensively we didn’t make the plays we needed and we paid for it. It was just a bad inning all around for us.”

From there the Bisons couldn’t seem to get much going at the plate other than a lone run in the sixth and eighth innings.

Crisan and Hanks swung the hot sticks for Lipscomb on Sunday. Crisan was 3-for-4, setting a career high in base hits. He also tied his career high with 2 RBI.

“I am seeing the ball well right now,” Crisan said. “I have been working really hard with Coach (Brad) Coon. The coaching staff knows what they are doing here at Lipscomb and I give all the credit in the world to them for helping us grow as a team.”

Hanks collected his second three-hit performance of the week, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Junior transfer Dayton Tripp got the Sunday nod for the second consecutive week for Lipscomb. He lasted four innings, giving up six runs on 10 hits. The loss was his first of the season, now 2-1.

Kyle Kemp shutout the Aces over the final four innings in relief for the Bisons. He only allowed one hit with four strikeouts and two walks.

“Kyle pitched four great innings for us,” Forehand said. “He was really in command and did some good things, but it was just unfortunate we were down so much to really get back into it.”
