MICHIGAN AT LIPSCOMB | MARCH 10, 2017 (DH)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb baseball team saw its two-game win streak snapped with an 8-2 loss to No. 19 Michigan in the opening game of a Friday doubleheader at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.

The second contest of the day did not go much better, as the Bisons failed to hang on to a ninth-inning lead before dropping a 4-3 decision.

“We had lots of opportunities today and we didn’t capitalize,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “That last game it seemed everything was rolling our way, but Michigan is a great team and they kept battling back.

“Sometimes baseball goes that way. You don’t have to like it every time, but hopefully this will help us grow.”

Lipscomb (8-6) will try to bounce back Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale against the Wolverines (11-3).

GAME TWO: Michigan 4, Lipscomb 3

Jeffrey Passantino once again delivered another stellar outing on the mound, but the Bisons were unable to hold on to a late lead and eventually succumbed to Michigan, 4-3.

“This was a tough loss for us, but Michigan is a great ball team,” Passantino said. “It really hurts that we couldn’t finish it there in the ninth, but I was excited about the way we played through the first eight innings.

“Hats off to Michigan for competing all the way through. They were a good test for us.”

Passantino had his best stuff on Friday, going 7.0 innings while allowing just one run and punching out six Michigan batters. For the fourth straight start, Passantino received a no-decision after Lipscomb failed to protect a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the ninth.

“I just go out and focus and my job, and the other guys focus on theirs,” Passantino. “The end goal is that it all comes together for us to get a win. Unfortunately today that didn’t happen.”

The two teams traded runs in the third inning with Cade Sorrells singling Solomon home in the bottom of the frame.

Solomon gave the Bisons a 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a solo blast from Tevin Symonette provided some insurance in the eighth.

However, Lipscomb blew its 3-1 lead by allowing three runs in the top of the ninth. Johnathan Engelmann’s two-RBI single provided the game-winning runs for Michigan.

“We have to learn how to close games out,” Forehand said “We had troubles at Auburn, we had troubles Wednesday and we had trouble tonight. It’s hard to build off of a lose, but that‘s what we have to do. We will get it fixed.”
