Allen Bolden hit two home runs in the third inning, driving in four runs in an eight-run attack, as the Lipscomb Bisons beat Stetson 12-5 Friday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.

The Bisons pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the game with catcher Jay Moreland leading the way with three hits, his season high.

Also putting together multi-hit games for the Bisons were M.L. Williams. Tyler Wilson, Tennyson Dodd, Branden Cadavid and Ryan Wilkins who each had two hits.

M.L. Williams hit his first double of his college career. Cadavid hit his third double of the season.

It is the fifth straight game for the Bisons with double figures in hitting.

“We talked about it and our bats are finally getting together with the pitching we have been having on weekends,” said Bisons coach Jeff Forehand. “Hopefully, we won’t have to worry about hanging on in a game with a couple of runs.

“Our pitchers in the mid-week have to keep learning and getting that experience. Maybe we can get them some relief work on the weekends and we will get it all rolling.”

Bolden is hopeful the game will propel him out of the offensive doldrums he has dealt with early in the season.

“I kind of hit rock bottom a third of the way through the season,” said Bolden, a senior center fielder. “I wasn’t getting things done the way I wanted to do on the field performance-wise.

“It affected my whole demeanor. I decided I was going to change my demeanor no matter what and I have had some things work out for me the last couple of games.”

Bolden, one of the leaders of the team, said his teammates were noticing a change in his approach to the game.

“My focus was the biggest thing,” said Bolden who also made some outstanding catches in center. “Everything is going well.”

Forehand also thinks that the Stetson game will be provide the boost that Bolden, one of the top offensive players on the team last season, needs to get back in a hitting groove on a consistent basis.

“Having someone hit two home runs in the same inning doesn’t happen a whole lot,” said Forehand. “Hopefully, one game is going to help him the rest of the year.”

Lipscomb junior left-hander Rex Brothers won his fourth game in five decisions, allowing six hits and five runs, only two earned, while striking out six and walking three in seven innings. Senior right-hander Kyle Tognazzini gave up two hits, walked three and struck out three while shutting down Stetson for two innings.

“We usually don’t bring Togs into a game in the eighth, especially with that kind of a lead,” said Forehand. “Our bullpen was kind of depleted except for Togs. This gave the rest of our bullpen another day’s rest.”

The Atlantic Sun series between Lipscomb and Stetson continues at 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday. Senior right-hander Brandon McClurg, 2-1, 2.35 earned run average, will start for the Bisons.

The Bisons are 9-10 overall, 6-1 in the A-Sun. Stetson is 8-13, 2-2 in the conference.
