The Lipscomb Bisons didn’t get the sweep, but they opened the Atlantic Sun portion of their season with two wins in a three-game series at Mercer.

Sunday afternoon at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga., the Bisons went into the ninth inning tied 3-3 with Mercer.

The Bisons won the first two games in the series.

Mercer took the lead with two outs in the fourth inning when Joe Winker hit a solo home run to right center.

The Bisons scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning after a double play.

Antonio Butler doubled to left field to score Branden Cadavid who had advanced to third on the double play from the third baseman to the catcher to the first baseman. Jay Moreland, who had been on second, also scored on the double.

Mercer tied the game in the bottom of the seventh using two hits and an infield error to produce two runs.

Jerry Young came on in relief of Lipscomb start Josh Smith to start the ninth inning.

After getting the first batter to strike out swinging Young allowed Sean Olenek to single through the left side of the field.

Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand brought in Kyle Tognazzini, who was making his third appearance in the series. He hit Nick DiMauro, the first batter he faced which moved Olenek to second. Tyler McCarty singled to left center to bring in Olenek with the winning run.

Cadavid was the only Bisons player with two hits. The Bisons had six hits for the day.

Josh Smith pitched eight innings for the Bisons. He gave up seven hits and three runs, two earned. He struck out nine and walked one.

Young was credited with the loss, his first of the season.

The Bisons, 5-6, 2-1 in the A-Sun, are back home at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium Tuesday to face Vanderbilt. Mercer is 5-6, 1-2 in the conference.
